NWCPJ meets each second Saturday of the month at 3:00pm at the Riverside Public Library, One Burling Rd in Riverside.
NWCPJ's film series will continue with Who Killed the Electric Car on Oct 17, 2007 and Uncounted on January 26, 2008.
The film: War Made Easy, was shown Saturday 9/22/07 at the Riverside Public Library, One Burling Road in Riverside. Media critic Norman Solomon's just released "War Made Easy," is a film based on his important book analyzing how the U.S. media passes along presidential spin on war to the American public. The film, narrated by actor Sean Penn, uses dramatic video clips from the past 50 years to make its case. Film distributors are encouraging folks to watch the film together. NWCPJ's Film Series took a break after last May when we presented the CodePINK film and area wide premiere of, Women Say No to War: Iraqi & American Women Speak Out. This powerful DVD chronicles CodePINK's Iraqi Women's Tour & 24-hour vigil in front of the White House last Mothers Day, 2006. In March 2006, CodePINK invited eight Iraqi women to the U.S. to speak about their experiences under the U.S. invasion and occupation. They were doctors, engineers, professors, and journalists. Two of the women had their entire families killed by U.S. troops. They were denied visas to enter the U.S. on the grounds that they did not have sufficient family to guarantee they would return to Iraq. The six women who were given visas traveled separately to dozens of cities throughout the U.S., speaking with community groups, churches, veterans, and families of active duty GIs. They asked Americans to end the occupation and bring all the troops home immediately. Upon their return to Iraq they faced death threats, lost their jobs, and some were forced into exile. The remarkable courage of these women and the authenticity of their witness to the horrendous reality of the occupation challenges Americans to take responsibility for the actions of the U.S. government and force an end to the brutal, illegal, and immoral occupation of Iraq. The film is available at www.codepink4peace.org. Recent titles in our series included George Orwell is Rolling in His Grave, shown in March 2007 and An Inconvenient Truth: a Global Warning shown in April. NWCPJ's film series began with Why We Fight, which won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival. This first showing took place in the downstairs meeting room at the Riverside Library, on September 23, 2006. About 30 people attended the film of which at least one third were high school students. The film was followed by a short discussion. You can preview Why We Fight at http://www.sonyclassics.com/whywefight/. It is available for check out at the Riverside Library. Other titles in our series were George Orwell is Rolling in His Grave, shown in March 2007 and An Inconvenient Truth: a Global Warning shown in April. NWCPJ's second film in its series was Stealing America Vote by Vote, an exciting new film we lucked into when we encountered technical problems with the originally scheduled Votergate: Expose of Election Fraud in the USA http://www.votergate.org/. The film was followed by a discussion led by representatives from the Illinois Ballot Integrity Project. The Doctor, the Depleted Uranium, and the Dying Children, 3rd in the series sponsored by NWCPJ, was shown in January 2007. It is an award winning (ÖKOMEDIA 2004) documentary film from Germany produced in 2004 that exposes the use and impact of radioactive weapons during the war against Iraq and in Kovsovo, specifically depleted uranium. Film details and availability can be seen at the Traprock Peace Center website. Fourth in our series was THE GROUND TRUTH: After the Killing Ends, which takes an unflinching look at the training and dehumanization of US soldiers and how they struggle to come to terms with it when they come back home. The Ground Truth will be shown February 24, 2007. A preview is available at http://www.thegroundtruth.org/film.html. |
